During a weekend-long event of family members visiting Augustana students, the third Covenant Award for the 2007-08 school year was awarded for, appropriately, the core value of Community.

On Feb. 23, during a Family Weekend event, senior mathematics and secondary education major Bob Goodwyn was given the award.

“I was really grateful to accept the award,” Goodwyn said. “It’s a good way to symbolize the value of our community.”

Dean of students Jim Bies presented the award.

Goodwyn said the qualifications of fellow candidates senior Elise Trujillo, junior Matt Clay and senior Laura Hibma were exceptional.

“I don’t think I necessarily embody the value the best,” Goodwyn said. “I was just the lucky one that was chosen.”

During the 2007 Viking Days Homecoming week, Goodwyn was chosen as Viking Days Homecoming King.

He also serves as the president of the student-led athletics fan group Augieholics and is involved in Students Keeping Ole’s Legacy (SKOL), Union Board of Governors (UBG) Big Event, men’s club soccer and multiple intramurals.

UBG Big Event co-governor senior Jacquelyn Strey, who has worked with Goodwyn in campus activities, said he is an excellent fit for the award.

“I think that Bob was the right person to get it,” Strey said. “He puts in a good effort to be really active on campus.”

Strey also said that Goodwyn puts a lot of heart into every aspect of the activities he is involved in.

Fellow nominee Hibma said she appreciates Augustana’s emphasis on community.

“I’ve really valued being a part of Augustana outside of just academics,” Hibma said. “It’s such a unique part of Augustana that you’re able to participate in things outside of the classroom.”

The process of choosing Covenant Award winners involves campus community members nominating candidates, with one subsequently being given the award.

“It’s really cool that somebody out of my peer group recognized me,” Goodwyn said.

Previous winners of Covenant Awards this school year include senior Kari Lenander for Christian faith and senior Andrew Kightlinger for Liberal Arts.

Lenander was presented with her award at the Homecoming worship service in October. Kightlinger received his in November at the Boe Forum.

Goodwyn plans to student teach in the fall and then study further in New Zealand.
